So sad to hear that my intellectual hero, Professor Richard D Alexander, has passed away. He was a towering scholarly figure who contributed to the study of insect behaviour and human moral systems. His PhD thesis (1956) and first publication from 1955 entitled "Capturing the melodies of insect singers" can be found on this website, which is a wonderful resource for students of behaviour: www.richarddalexander.com
His ideas will live on to inspire generations of scientists interested in the ecology and evolution of behaviour. In the photograph below he is in Evanston in the early 80's. Left to right: William D. Hamilton, Richard D. Alexander, Napoleon A. Chagnon, Sewall Wright, and George C. Williams.
